How to Start a Relationship with God

Like any other realtionship we have, a great relationship with God doesn’t happen overnight.  It is the result of time and daily, thoughtful effort.  Whether you are just beginning this extraordinary journey or you are trying to improve your existing relationship, we want to help you take whatever steps you need to make.

A relationship with God is much like any other relationship. You must build it by getting to know each other.  God has a huge advantage here because He knows everything about you already.  Don't let that scare you away.  Even though He knows absolutely everything that can be known about us, He still loves us more deeply than anyone else ever has, ever will, or ever can.  He desperately wants you to come to Him. So much so that He let His only son die just for the possibility that you will seek Him.

One way to begin to get to know God is to read the Bible.  The Bible tells the story of God reaching out to people of all kinds, regardless of their life stage or circumstance.  You can be confident He is reaching out to you as well.

Another important part of relationships is trust.  God again has the advantage because he knows our hearts better than we do.  As we begin to model our thoughts, attitudes and actions after Jesus, we can build our trust in God.  We will begin to see that what God has said about life really is true.  This will not necessarily be an easy or quick journey, but it will be a rewarding one.  Only God can give us real peace and contentment for ourselves and genuine love for others.  He already knows all about each of us, and you specifically.  The question then, is not will God trust us, but will we trust Him with our future, or will we continue to try and work circumstances on our own?

Communication is very important in any relationship. The Bible is one way in which God communicates with us. Prayer is a way we communicate with God. God already knows our thoughts and our needs, so prayer is not about informing God of things or simply giving Him our "wish list".  Prayer is about taking time to reflect on our lives, making sure we know what is important in our lives, and sharing our concerns with God.  By talking about these things in prayer, we are reminded that God knows our hearts and all our needs.  They are left in His hands for His work.
